'Upside down and burning': Air traffic audio released in 'incredible' Toronto plane crash

New audio has been obtained of air traffic controllers' first response to the crash of a Delta Connection CRJ-900 that came to rest upside-down at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday.

"Where is the crash?" stated someone on the audio from the Medevac helicopter, according to a recording obtained by CNN

"It's on Runway 23, right at the threshold, right at the intersection there — 23 and 15 Left," said the controller. Later in the recording, the controller said, "LifeFlight 1, Medevac, just so you are aware, there are people outside walking around the aircraft there."

"Yeah, we've got it," said the helicopter pilot. "The aircraft is upside down and burning."

The crash, which follows several other high-profile incidents including a fatal mid-air collision between an American Eagle regional flight and a Blackhawk helicopter in Washington, D.C., was particularly shocking to social media, as footage captured by a passenger who walked off the plane clearly showed the burning, upside-down fuselage of the CRJ-900, smoke rising into the air, as firefighters worked to control any flames and other passengers staggered to safety.

No information about the cause of the crash has yet been investigated or revealed to the public. However, already some are speculating online; right-wing talk radio hosts are wondering with no evidence whether diversity programs put unqualified people in charge of the flight or control tower, while others have been quick to attack President Donald Trump's administration for gutting personnel at the Federal Aviation Administration.
