Police chief cites non-existent Bible verse after complaint about anti-gay video on official Facebook page

The police chief of a small Georgia city posted a speech by a messianic rabbi preacher who called the United States "a nation in spiritual schizophrenia" while condemning the Supreme Court's marriage equality ruling to the police department's official Facebook page.

Varnell police chief Lyle Grant admitted to posting the video and said it was the wrong thing to do. It was removed after an LGBT citizen of Varnell complained, the Daily Citizen reports. Before removing the video, Grant responded defensively by telling the woman she could delete it if she didn't like it.

The video shows Rabbi Jonathan Cahn speaking at the U.S. Capitol building. It was originally posted by a Facebook page belonging to Nigeriacamera

"It was coming across the newsfeed and I posted it,” Grant told the Citizen. "[Cahn] was talking in a federal building about George Washington 200 years ago and about how the country was founded and (he) said we need to get back to the grassroots of how the country was founded."

He said he wasn't trying to offend anyone.

"What happened to separation of church and state?" the woman asked, and said she should feel safe and protected by the police department in her city.

"If it’s good enough for Congress to hear then we the people should hear it also, you are a guest on our page, it is not run by, or endorsed by the state," Grant responded. "There is a delete button to select if you do not like a post. Signed Joshua 25:15."

According to the Citizen, there's no Bible verse for Joshua 25:15, but Joshua 24:15 says, "But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord."

In the video, Rabbi Jonathan Cahn talks feverishly about his belief that God will punish the United States for the landmark Supreme Court ruling that made same-sex marriage legal in all states. He said the nation is "at war against its own foundation."

"The Supreme Court opens its sessions with the words 'God save the United States and this honorable court," he says. "But if this honorable court should then overrule the word of God and strike down the eternal rules of order and right that heaven itself hath ordained, how then will God save it?"

The Varnell Police Department mostly shares local news updates about crime on their Facebook page. Grant agreed with city officials that the page should only be used for matters related to policing and city business.

"On a personal note, when it comes to sexuality, I don’t really give a rat's ass who you sleep with in the sack but if you sleep with a goat I’m going to call the Humane Society on you," Varnell City Councilman Jan Pourquoi told the Citizen. "That's number one. Number two, I think there are more important things to worry about than a video."

When the reporter asked whether the post was appropriate for the police department's page, Pourquoi responded, "You’re asking me if it’s wrong for a Christian man to post something about what he believes in because of the politically correct rules. I say screw the politically correct world. You can quote me on that."
