Police: Woman cut into 9-month-old baby’s throat with power saw to stop her crying

Officials in Chicago said on Monday that a woman was suspected of using a power saw to murder a baby, and then trying to kill herself.

The Chicago Tribunereported that police found the child at a home on Chicago's West Side at around 9:40 a.m. on Monday.

According to law enforcement officials, a 52-year-old woman who was frustrated over the 9-month-old girl's crying had used a circular saw to cut her throat. The suspect then tried to take her own life, police said.

Ben Llamas told The Chicago Tribune that he was working with the child's father at a grain elevator in Beecher when police called. Llamas said that he gave the father a ride to the crime scene on South Avers Avenue.

"There's nothing better than kind of minding your own business," Llamas recalled. "We just drove in silence. He was in shock."

Neighbor Francisco Arreola said that a mother, a father and two girls lived in the home. It wasn't clear if the home had any other occupants.

Police said that the suspect, who was described as a relative of the victim, was in stable condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.
