Three of Trump's attorneys who were accused of helping to craft the 2020 election scheme — Sidney Powell, Kenneth Chesebro, and Jenna Ellis — have now pleaded guilty in the Georgia election racketeering case. The next lawyer to watch could be Rudy Giuliani, who not only was implicated by Ellis in her plea deal, but is also drowning in debt from legal fees he can't afford.
That's the view of former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti, who walked through the situation on MSNBC's "The Beat" Friday.
"Renato, do you think these are winnable cases against [Mark] Meadows and Giuliani and the remainders in Georgia?" asked anchor Ari Melber, himself an attorney.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
"I do," said Mariotti. "And I think part of the reason why is you do have these sort of shotgun effects of what [Fulton County District Attorney] Fani Willis did. If you fire a shotgun at a crowd of people you're going to hit somebody, right? And she's already hit some targets, she's bagged a few targets."
"I think what she's sent is a message that she's reasonable," Mariotti continued. "She's not going to pursue the maximum possible penalty. She's not going to try to squeeze them to have a very tough resolution. She's looking for cooperators. She's looking for people to plead guilty now, and they'll get a reasonable deal if they do."
"I really think the pressure now is on someone like a Giuliani," added Mariotti. "If you're Giuliani and running on legal fees and sued by some of these election workers in Georgia who he defamed, he's got a whole host of problems here. Maybe it's attractive for him to be Jenna Ellis and show some remorse in order to get a lenient deal."
Ted Goodman, adviser to Giuliani, told Raw Story that the "only deal the mayor is making is to tell the truth."
"[A]nd unfortunately, every single prosecutor in this case is a partisan Democrat focused on their own partisan political ambitions and keeping President Donald Trump out of the White House," Goodman said Saturday. "Most level-headed Americans—including ones who don't agree with President Trump or Mayor Giuliani's politics—understand that the highly partisan prosecutors in Georgia are doing great damage to our country and to the very fabric of this nation by continuing to weaponize our criminal justice system in an effort to keep President Trump out of the White House and to take down the people around him."
