Pro-impeachment congressman warns prosecutors off giving Trump immunity in exchange for resignation

A New York congressman and pro-impeachment advocate on Tuesday said prosecutors should not offer Donald Trump immunity in exchange for resignation -- if it ever comes to that.

"I don't think anybody should be given immunity unless they're cooperating with the authorities and they're leading to a bigger investigation," Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-NY) told TMZ.

Although Trump is president, "he should not be given a pass," Espaillat said.

The congressman noted that a typical citizen is not granted immunity unless they're cooperating and it leads to an arrest for a larger crime.

Trump, the Democrat said, should "absolutely not" be granted what typical citizens are not.

It's unclear whether discussions of immunity in exchange for Trump's resignation have been held, but it's not unprecedented -- in 2017, Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe struck such a deal in exchange for his resignation and the country's leader.
