Rachel Maddow trolls Arizona Tea Partiers threatening to censor biology textbooks

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow got a step ahead of a trio of lame-duck Tea Party school board members in Arizona on Tuesday, saying biology materials they tried to censor are now available online.

"They're lovely in their boring biology-ness," she said of the pages, taken from an AP Biology textbook. "So if you want to brush up on how a baby's made or how contraception works and all that stuff at a 10th grade level, be my guest."

Maddow said she set up a website, ArizonaHonorsBiology.com, after the Gilbert School Board, by a 3-2 Tea Party majority, voted last month to remove two pages from an honors biology text discussing the "morning after" pill and abortion.

One of the school board members, Daryl Colvin, subsequently said the "cheapest, least disruptive way" to scrub the text would be to physically rip the pages out of each textbook.

However, Maddow said, Colvin, as well as fellow conservatives Julie Smith and board president Staci Burk, all lost their bids for re-election earlier this month, spurring a rumor that they would try to remove the pages anyway before they officially leave office.

But with the "offending" sections from the AP and honors texts now online, Maddow explained, that threat was rendered useless for eternity, "or until I forget to pay the bill one month."

"Arizona may be conservative, but Arizona, you are still part of the United States," she said. "You really can't pretend some parts of biology don't exist because they make you feel oogy."
