Radio host: Sports have lost their way because of 'women giving us directions'

San Francisco sports radio host Damon Bruce accused "feminized" men and women for what he perceived as a loss of focus for the sporting world during his show on Thursday, Deadspin reported.

"A lot of sports has lost its way, and I'm gonna tell you, part of the reason is because we've got women giving us directions," Bruce said. "For some of you, this is going to come across as very misogynistic. I don't care, because I'm very right."

A call seeking comment from Bruce's program director at KNBR-AM has not been returned.

Bruce also claimed that "Everyone's coming to my view" of the bullying case involving Miami Dolphins player Richie Incognito, who is being investigated by the National Football League for allegedly hazing teammate Jonathan Martin.

"A lot of the problem is based in Jonathan Martin's inability to deal with a professional locker room environment," Bruce argued. "Which might have turned unprofessional. But again, I'm gonna quote Chris Rock: 'The key word in self-confidence is self.'"

Though Bruce did not cite any sources for his allegation and blamed Martin for letting Incognito's reported hazing continue past his first year in the league, Sports Illustratedpublished an interview on Friday with former Dolphins who suggested Incognito also behaved contrary to the locker room "code" by extending his pranks against Martin into the regular season; usually, that behavior stops after training camp.

"That's what I think I am most upset about," one unnamed player told SI. "I don't think that Richie intended to be a bully. But then he messed with [Martin] even through his second year. That's not right. That's not how it is supposed to go."

Bruce also singled out sportswriter Wendy Thurm for praise before veering into a dismissal of women in sports in general.

"I enjoy Wendy's contributions to the sports that she covers. I enjoy many of the women's contributions to the sports," Bruce said, before laughing and recanting. "Well that's a lie. I can't even pretend that's true. There are very few -- a small handful -- of women who are any good at this at all. That's the truth. The amount of women talking in sports to the amount of women who have something to say is one of the most disproportionate ratios I've ever seen in my fricking life."

Bruce did not specify which women he thought "have something to say." Thurm transcribed portions of Bruce's commentary for sports reporting site Bay Area Sports Guy, including his directive to "all the women, all the guidance counselors" and "all the sensitive males," among others that "all of this world of sports, especially the world of football, has a setting. It's set to men."

Bay Area Sports Guy and other sports-related sites like like Deadspin, Awful Announcing have criticized Bruce's remarks. He seemed to acknowledge that on Twitter on Friday morning, where he posted, "Good morning to everyone! Twitter lynch mob wants me hanged by my neck, till [sic] I'm dead!"
