Rapper receives death threats after newspaper falsely accuses her of burning Confederate flag at concert

Mississippi-born hip-hop artist Genesis Be made headlines last year for a controversial performance featuring a Confederate flag. But after a local newspaper claimed she burned one onstage at a New York City show, racists began sending her death threats.

In an article about Be's participation in a documentary about peaceful protest of the Mississippi's Confederate-inspired flag, the Biloxi-based Sun Herald newspaper claimed in their headline that Be "burned the Confederate flag in New York."

In reality, Be wore the rebel flag as well as a noose during a performance, and according to the New York Daily News, audience members encouraged her to burn the flag -- but she merely threw it into the crowd and let them have at it.

That headline error in the now-deleted article didn't appear to have been corrected before the article went to print, and Be said that in response, she's received death threats.

The threatening comments were posted on the Facebook page of the Delta Flaggers, a pro-rebel flag group. They include calls for Be to be shot and burned in lieu of the flag.

Last year, Be also received death threats in response to her Confederate flag-wearing protest shortly after she performed with it.
