Religious right voter guides displayed at Virginia polling place

A polling station in Virginia displayed voter guides created by conservative Christian groups, video uploaded to YouTube on Tuesday showed.

Shepherd Johnson, who uploaded the video, said he didn't see anybody reading the voter guides at the Central Virginia Assembly of God in Gum Spring, but they were only about 20 feet away from the voting booths.

"They were well within the area marked with a sign and chalk line described as 'prohibited area and activities' at the entrance to the polling place," he told Raw Story. "I plan on reporting this incident to state and federal election officials but have not yet done so."

The voter guide (PDF) found at the church notes that President Barack Obama opposes "religious liberty" and the "appointment of conservative justices," while it states that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney supports both. It also states that Obama supports "open homosexuality in the military" and "government control of healthcare," while Romney opposes both.

The voter guide also displays the policies of gubernatorial candidates Tim Kaine (D) and George Allen (R), stating that Kaine opposes "upholding traditional definition of marriage," while Allen supports it.

Under Virginia law, it is illegal to exhibit any campaign material or in any manner attempt to influence any person in casting his or her vote within 40 feet of a polling station.

The voter guide was created by Focus on the Family, The Family Foundation, and Family Research Council.
