Report: Chris Christie was Romney's first choice for VP

Politico reported Saturday that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was advisers to Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney's first choice for vice president before the former Massachusetts governor overruled his advisers and chose Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) following his overseas trip to the Olympics.

Politico's Mike Allen and Jim VandeHei reported, "Romney was so close to picking Christie that some top advisers at the campaign’s Boston headquarters believed the governor had been offered the job. The campaign made tentative plans to announce a pick in late July, just before Romney headed off on his overseas trip, starting with a stop at the London Olympics."

But Romney held off making a final decision until returning from his overseas trip and "leaving Christie hanging" until the official announcement of Ryan as the pick. The Politico report said the choice left some "bitterness" in the Christie camp.

An unnamed official told Politico that Romney soured on Christie due to some of his brashness and vulgar language. "The explosiveness had some risk," the official said.

In May, the New Jersey Star-Ledger reported that Christie told a group of students, "I really have no interest in being vice president, but if Gov. Romney called and asked me to sit down and talk to him about it, I’d listen because I think you owe the nominee, your party that level of respect — and who knows what he’s going to say?"

He added that Romney "might be able to convince me, he’s a convincing guy."

Most recently, Christie as been busy praising President Barack Obama's disaster relief response in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, which hit the state of New Jersey the hardest.

, Christie said, "The president was great last night. He said he would get it done. At 2 a.m., I got a call from FEMA to answer a couple of final questions and then he signed the declaration this morning. So I have to give the president great credit. He’s been on the phone with me three times in the last 24 hours. He’s been very attentive, and anything that I’ve asked for, he’s gotten to me. So, I thank the president publicly for that. He’s done — as far as I’m concerned — a great job for New Jersey."

When Fox hosts asked about Romney coming to New Jersey to tour the damage, Christie responded, "I have a job to do. ... If you think right now I give a damn about presidential politics then you don’t know me."
