GOP official says Republican caucus will 'lock the door' to get a speaker ASAP
October 08, 2023
One Republican revealed to Fox that the House GOP intends to do whatever it takes to get a new speaker as soon as possible.
The attack in Israel has presented a unique problem for House Republicans as top defense officials prepared to brief the Gang of Eight over the weekend on the situation.
The House Speaker is typically included in such briefings, but the GOP-led Congress doesn't have a speaker. The interim speaker, Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) hasn't been cleared for such briefings, nor is he allowed under the rules to make any decisions about the situation.
As a stand-in, McHenry is only able to call the Congress to order, adjourn, and hold a vote for a new speaker. He has no other power outside of that.
Fox congressional reporter Chad Pergram posted on the social media site previously known as Twitter that Rep. Greg Murphy (R-NC) told him: "We’re pretty much (going to put) a lock the door on Tuesday to hopefully come out with a consensus candidate. You know, there are two individuals now with both very good qualifications, different different challenges."
Far-right Republicans ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy last week after he made a deal with Democrats and the White House to avert a shutdown in previous months. Now that the budget agreement is coming due, the far-right triggered their removal. McCarthy made a deal with those on the right that they could remove him with significantly fewer members than previous Congresses.
Congress also has a Pentagon budget to pass as well as the upcoming Farm Bill. Israel has also suffered a serious attack by the terrorist group Hamas.
