Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) admitted that he voted for a Republican budget that would cut thousands from the Medicaid rolls without lowering the "quality of care" for those who are left.
During a Thursday interview on C-SPAN's Washington Journal program, host Mimi Geerges noted that Bacon had been critical of Medicaid cuts but voted for them anyway.
"You told Roll Call last week that the GOP budget resolution appeared to cut too deeply into Medicaid, but you voted for it anyway," Geerges explained.
Bacon said he voted for the budget after being given "assurances" by GOP leadership.
"Which means there will be cuts to Medicaid," the C-SPAN host noted.
"Yeah, but not cuts that will affect the quality of care," Bacon vowed. "So, for example, they're going to add work requirements for able-bodied adults that don't have children. They're going to audit all the lists, they stop doing that, and if you don't belong on Medicaid, they'll take you off."
"But they're not going to go after the quality of care," he added. "And that's the assurance I have, and it's the expectation for President Trump that that will not happen either."
In his 2024 campaign, President Donald Trump promised he would not impact Medicaid recipients.

"We're not going to do anything with that unless we can find some abuse or waste," Trump insisted. "The people won't be affected. It will only be more effective and better."
