Republican Stuart Stevens could not understand why MSNBC was spending any time talking about the aging Democrats dropping out of Congress rather than a president who has deployed the National Guard to police U.S. citizens.
The conversation was about Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), who announced on Tuesday he would retire from Congress at the end of the term.
"I just have to pause for a — somehow, we're having this national conversation about what's wrong with the Democratic Party when we have this lunatic president who's appointed people like RFK Jr. We've been talking about who's sending federal troops into cities that he doesn't think are politically correct. And we're discussing what's wrong with the Democratic Party? How did this happen?" he exclaimed.
"This is a very healthy thing in the Democratic Party to have new people wanting to run," he added.
Stevens went on to say that to win the fight against Republicans, Democrats must articulate that what's happening isn't normal and isn't acceptable.
"They can't look at the Republican Party as a normal political party. It's become an extremist movement. We saw that when you can't even get a senator to say that RFK going after vaccines is something that doesn't make you trust him. It's really nothing like this has ever happened before, where one party has completely abdicated its role."
He said that Democrats should wrap themselves in what is "really American" and not be the "Pro-Putin party."
