A former Wisconsin Supreme Court justice hired by GOP lawmakers in Wisconsin to "audit" the results of the 2020 election committed major violations of attorney ethics, according to a blistering report released by state legal regulators, The Washington Post reported.
Michael Gableman, who backed Donald Trump's conspiracy theories of a stolen election despite freely admitting not to have "a comprehensive understanding or even any understanding of how elections work," caused extensive public drama throughout his special counsel investigation, at one point even threatening to arrest various local officials for not responding to his demands. He even recommended decertifying Wisconsin's 10 electoral votes, which was not possible under the law.
Eventually, Robin Vos, the state assembly speaker, grew tired of Gableman's antics and dismissed him.

But the ethics report, written by Donald Schott of the Wisconsin Office of Lawyer Regulation, uncovers even more evidence of wrongdoing, wrote Patrick Marley for the Post.
"The state office that oversees lawyers alleged former justice Michael Gableman filed false information with a judge, repeatedly engaged in dishonesty, unfairly disparaged a judge and an attorney, failed to perform competent legal work, did not follow the directions of his client, released confidential information and lied to the lawyer who investigated him."
The report further found that Gableman "didn’t maintain investigative records properly and didn’t appropriately respond to public records requests ... When he was sued over his handling of public records, Gableman accused the judge overseeing the case of being biased against him and 'not interested in right or wrong,'" a remark that was out of line with attorney conduct standards. Furthermore Gableman "failed to perform competent legal work by not following the records law."
The state Supreme Court will ultimately assign a referee to look over the report and determine whether he'll face sanctions.
