Donald Trump is walking a tightrope as he balances supporting Robert F. Kennedy Jr. while simultaneously trying to placate GOP critics of the controversial Health and Human Services Secretary, reports Politico.
The deeper Kennedy gets into his tenure at the HHS, the more conservatives who once endorsed him grow alarmed at his actions, with Kennedy enduring withering criticism from Republican lawmakers at a nationally televised Senate hearing last week.
According to the report from Politico’s Carmen Paun, Grace Yarrow and Megan Messerly, Trump is stuck between needing Kennedy’s “Make America Healthy Again” supporters while “trying to make sure Kennedy doesn’t push traditional GOP allies out.”
At the same time that the president is offering support for Kennedy in comments to the press, he also avoided getting his hands dirty when Kennedy unveiled his child health initiative to waiting reporters on Tuesday, with the White House stating the president had a conflict in his schedule.
According to the report, many of the initiatives that MAHA adherents had hoped would come from his Make America Healthy Again Commission, were not included in the report reveal, which is attributed to interference from the White House.
“The report shows how Trump, for all the outward support he’s lent Kennedy, has also reined in the firebrand anti-vaccine activist,” Politico is reporting before noting that Trump recently told reporters, “He’s got some little different ideas,” and that the embattled Kennedy “means very well.”
However, the report notes, “Still, it’s clear that Trump is also listening to other people in his coalition.
