Rick Santorum defends Mike Huckabee: 'War on Women' tag is unfair to GOP

Former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum didn't identify on Thursday who ex-Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) meant by "Uncle Sugar," but told CNN host Stephanie Cutter Huckabee's mistake was simply one of word choice.

"Do you think language like that, though, helps your [party's] image with women?" Cutter asked.

"I think Governor Huckabee would probably phrase it differently," Santorum said, before gesturing to co-host Newt Gingrich. "Mike speaks off the cuff, as some of us are known to do, and probably would [have] chose different words to communicate that."

Huckabee was filmed earlier in the day saying Democrats were "by making them believe they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing them for them a prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido."

Santorum did, however, join Huckabee in complaining about the "War on Women" tag attached to the GOP's reproductive health policies.

"In fact, Republicans have been tremendous in supporting equality of women, in the workplace and other places," Santorum argued. "We happen to disagree on reproductive rights and abortion. But on the issue of contraception, I don't think there's a whole lot of disagreement in America."
