DeSantis will appear on Morning Joe amid another comeback attempt
October 08, 2023
Ron DeSantis will appear on MSNBC Tuesday to answer questions from one of his critics, Politico reported.
According to the news, DeSantis, who has slowly watched his poll numbers sink, is reaching out to the network former President Donald Trump calls MS-DNC, alleging it's a pro-Democratic network.
“Ron DeSantis isn’t afraid to show up and talk about his record and vision for America’s future,” DeSantis' spokesperson Andrew Romeo told Politico.
That said, this will be the first time DeSantis has ever appeared on the network. While DeSantis has all but banned "diversity equity and inclusion" programs, his spokesperson claimed the Florida governor wants "a diverse swath of media."
While other candidates like Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) and Nikki Haley (R-SC) have been able to garner broad media attention, DeSantis has suffered, preferring only to stay on far-right television.
DeSantis is known for being combative with media, snapping at them in press conferences, attacking them at press avails with other officials, and as NBC News reported in June "losing his temper."
It's unclear if DeSantis has ever done MSNBC as the governor, but with some polls showing him in third place, he appears to be searching for all other options.
Some analysts claimed that DeSantis peaked before he even announced he was running for president. Polls reflect the claim, showing his numbers of support for president at their top before he announced. Once he began a book tour promoting his plan if elected to the presidency, they began to drop. When he began campaigning throughout Iowa and New Hampshire his numbers fell even further. The more he appeared in the states the more his numbers fell.
Columnists attribute it to being "painfully awkward," weird and alienating, and even lacking in good manners. Comedian Seth Meyers said he eats “like a starving animal who has never eaten before." One Iowa report said that while skipping around the state "he laughed like a maniac," and that "it matters more than you think."
Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough, a former Florida congressman who will conduct the interview, has attacked DeSantis for both policy and personality, calling him "strange" and "bush league."
One of the most telling moments was when DeSantis met President Joe Biden after Hurricane Ian. Biden, known for his warmth, compassion and care, hugged Floridians, held their hands, and played the role of consoler-in-chief. Nearby DeSantis stood awkwardly as if he was trying to find someplace to put his hands in a suit jacket that seemed too tight.
When Biden came to visit after Hurricane Idalia, DeSantis was nowhere to be found.
Even DeSantis' launch failed, with Elon Musk's "Twitter Spaces," which embarrassed both men. Musk has now abandoned Twitter's name and his previous support for DeSantis.
