Russia now knows they can get away with conning Americans: former counter-intelligence officer

National security analyst and counter-intelligence officer Steve Hall said that Attorney General Bill Barr's summary of the Mueller report should unite all Americans: Russia thinks it can get away with anything.

"Everybody agrees with the possible exception of Donald Trump, who apparently, still has some doubts in this regard, that Russia attacked us in 2016 and they did it again in 2018, and they're probably going to do it again in 2020 and into the future," Hall warned. "This hybrid world that they've developed, part of which is trying to do influence operations and all of the things that you were just reading."

The former counter-intelligence officer wondered what Russian President Vladimir Putin was thinking after reading Barr's summary.

"And I think one thing the Russian intelligence services are thinking is, 'Hum, now we have a much better idea as to where the channel markers are. Where the lanes in the road are,'" Hall continued. "And they're actually, I think, the Russians are probably a bit surprised at how broad they can go and next time they go against us in a hybrid-warfare type of fashion, at the very least in 2020, they'll know that they can probably push a little it further than they thought that they could. They can get a little closer to that edge, because what they've learned is due to our system of justice due to our open society, and how things work here, they actually have a lot more room to work with and still people aren't going to be thrown into jail or, at least the most important people aren't going to be accused of things. And I think that's a very important lesson learned."

While the special counsel indicted several hackers and at least one international company, those cases likely won't see the inside of an American courtroom.
