Luther Strange (R-AL) seemed poised to lose his primary, and to top it all off, Kentucky's Louisville University announced they were under investigation by the FBI.
Now, with the announcement that a high-ranking centrist Republicans was not seeking re-election, McConnell's day went from bad to worse.
As "Meet The Press" host Chuck Todd noted after Corker announced his retirement, the timing seemed especially bad.
"If you were looking for a time to rub salt in Mitch McConnell's wound," Todd said, "it would be today."
