Angela Colton, a senior official of San Diego's Environmental Services Department, was escorted out of San Diego City Hall late last week in the wake of a report that some workers under her supervision tossed a homeless person into a garbage truck.
The Los Angeles Times reports that neither Colton nor city officials are willing to discuss the reasons for her departure, although a city spokesperson said simply that "appropriate disciplinary action has been taken" against her.
"Colton had been a key official in charge of the city's response to the growing number of homeless encampments and tents that have cropped up throughout downtown San Diego and elsewhere in recent years," the LA Times writes.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported last month that city work crews accidentally scooped up a homeless person as they were clearing out a homeless encampment on the Friday before Christmas.
The homeless person, who had been asleep inside a tent, started frantically screaming and waving their arms when they realized they were in the back of a garbage truck. The city workers noticed the person yelling just before they were about to turn on the truck's compactor.
After that, the person successfully climbed down from the truck and fled the scene, and city officials say they have been unable to locate them.
