Santorum heckler at GOP debate outraged over booing of gay soldier

The mystery of who heckled candidates at Tuesday night's The Washington Post/Bloomberg Republican presidential debate has been solved.

Andrew Vera of Hanover, New Hampshire told ConcordPatch that he raised his voice after Rick Santorum, who vehemently opposes same sex marriage, blamed the faltering U.S. economy on "the breakdown of the American family."

"The biggest problem with poverty in America -- and we don't talk about here because it's an economic discussion -- and that is the breakdown of the American family," Santorum said. "We need to have a policy that supports families, that encourages marriages, that has fathers take responsibility for their children. You can't have limited government, you can't have a wealthy society if the family breaks down, that basic unit of society."

That's when Vera spoke up.

"I said, 'Yeah, right, you say you want American Values back in the American Family, then where were you, when they during the last debate?'" he recalled.

"As they pulled me out, I screamed, 'don't taze me, don't taze me.'"

Although Vera was cited for disorderly conduct, he said he has no regrets.

"I served in the U.S. Navy, in support and defense of the constitution. It's a living document."
