'Says terrible things about his mental state': CNN's Avlon appalled Trump spent Sunday promoting conspiracy nuts

CNN's John Avlon on Monday was appalled that President Donald Trump spent his Sunday promoting tweets from conspiracy theorists without once discussing the horrific massacre of Muslims in New Zealand.

In surveying Trump's tweets on Sunday, CNN host John Berman noted that the president defended Fox News' Jeanine Pirro after she reportedly got suspended for an anti-Muslim rant last week, and also attacked the late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). Additionally, Trump promoted tweets by conspiracy theorist Jack Posobiec and by a believer in the QAnon conspiracy theory.

Avlon said that Trump's crazed tweets represented a profound failure to fulfill his duties as president.

"He has real responsibilities to lead our nation, the office of the president is primarily one of moral leadership, as FDR said a long time ago," he said. "This is a president who seems fixated on lashing out, on nursing his own grievances."

Avlon said that this focus on himself at a time when an important American ally is dealing with a terrorist attack targeting Muslims was particularly appalling.

"The president ignored [the New Zealand massacre] entirely in order to focus on his own small insecurities and grievances," he said. "That says terrible things about his mental state."
