The Supreme Court handed President Donald Trump a big victory on Tuesday by ruling 8-1 that Trump's executive order requiring federal agencies to reduce their workforce is legal.
The case had been pending in the judiciary since February after a lower court issued a temporary injunction. Tuesday's ruling paves the way for the Trump administration to fire federal workers, although the court dodged questions about the legality of any reorganization plans created by federal agencies, according to the executive order.
The internet reacted fiercely to the order, and to liberal Justices Elena Kagan and Sonya Sotomayor siding with the court's conservative supermajority. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented.
"Trump's SCOTUS cleared the way for more cuts in services that are vitally needed, and people out of jobs. This is so flipping wrong!" one commentator wrote on Bluesky.
"Federal workers face abrupt terminations, while critical services, such as disaster relief, public health, and workplace safety, teeter on the brink of collapse," reads a post on X, formerly Twitter. "Legal battles persist, but the ruling signals a bleak future for government stability, with Trump's executive power unchecked for now, the public braces for diminished protections as agencies crumble under the weight of unchecked cuts."
"Another example of the politicized SCOTUS bowing to the wanna be dictator. Enough of these 'emergency orders'. Need open debate," reads a post on Bluesky.
"From Citizens United right down to the present moment, the Roberts-era SCOTUS has become a disgrace to the institution and a danger to the health of the republic," another post on Bluesky reads.
"This isn't surprising anymore, but it's still disappointing. Why can't we let the lower courts do anything of significance without SCOTUS intervening??" reads another post on Bluesky.
