An unapologetic Sean Hannity claims his job is to ask the tough questions of lawmakers while the U.S. navigates the sprawling conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East and at home.
That's not exactly what Hannity did, however. Over the weekend, a staffer named "Stephanie" demanded lawmakers tell Hannity why they're not supporting Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) for the Speaker's post questioning their patriotism and pressuring them to fall in line.
"Oh, I offer no apologies from doing my job in seeking answers from those public servants," said Hannity on Monday. "Again, keyword: servants of we the people."
The far-right conservative and long-time Donald Trump adviser made it clear he sees his job as hammering lawmakers.
"Why is it a shock to certain lawmakers and members of the media mob — all of you out there — that yours truly, a member of the press, is daring to ask elected representatives — the so-called elected Reps of this country — if and when they plan to wrap up this Speaker battle and reopen the people's House amid growing chaos at home and abroad," he asked.
Then Hannity took a figurative bow to his self-applause for taking members of the Republican Party to task over stalling to fill the Speaker position since Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was removed.
"I do have to chuckle — a few of my questions, simple questions, that I asked to some of the Republicans over the weekend about the importance of getting a Speaker as soon as possible — showed we have a few sensitive snowflakes in Congress," he said.
"Here's the truth: They are the majority. They need to act like it," the TV show host delivered a reality check. "No deals with the Democrats. And that would mean ah, yeah no temporary solutions either."
Hannity's claim of "no temporary solutions," seemed to fly in the face of his demand to get "a Speaker as soon as possible."
Hannity then rattled off some other critical items he demanded of the leaders.
"Elect a Speaker, get the House open, and start doing your job," he said. "The good news is the anonymous votes end tomorrow and we will know and we will see which the Republicans understand what is the importances of this moment in history; not only for the Republican party for them to unite. Then to lead by reopening the people's House while we have war in the Middle East and war in Europe and open borders and serious budget deadlines."
Hannity stands accused of serving as a surrogate enforcer for Jordan whereby he was passing along an email to sway undecided or non-Jordan supporters.
It asks if it is true that the Republican member is not supporting Jordan. "Can you please let me know if this is accurate?"
It adds: "And, if true, Hannity would like to know why during a war breaking out between Israel and Hamas, with the war in Ukraine, with the wide open borders, with a budget that's unfinished why would Rep. xxxx be against Jim Jordan for speaker? Please let us know when Rep xxx plans on opening the People's House so work can be done. Lastly, are there any conditions Rep xxxx will work with Democrats on the process of electing a new speaker? The deadline for comment is 11 AM tomorrow 10/16. Thank you."
Hannity's email had miffed some moderates taking issue over the host essentially meddling with potential Jordan defectors.
One lawmaker told Axios reporter Juliegrace Brufke the tactic was counterproductive.
