Fox News reporter Bill Melugin revealed that agency officials are privately furious, saying the shooting of Pretti and the insistence he planned a “massacre” — contradicted by video evidence — has been “catastrophic” for morale, with some considering quitting outright. The criticism quickly spread, as conservative pundit Erick Erickson reported Trump’s growing displeasure, and conservative columnist Jonah Goldberg accused DHS and Stephen Miller’s camp of prioritizing “spectacle” over safety and credibility, and other conservative voices warned that Kristi Noem and Border Patrol leadership have torched the agency’s standing — all while Goldberg openly mocked Vice President JD Vance’s defense of the incident as yet another implausible narrative.
