Singer Andra Day performs amazing version of anti-lynching song 'Strange Fruit' at Global Citizen Fest

Singer Andra Day performed a thorny, impassioned version of the anti-lynching ballad "Strange Fruit" -- originally made famous by chanteuse and jazz trailblazer Billie Holiday -- at the Global Citizen Festival in New York's Central Park on Saturday.

Wearing a blood red gown and broken handcuffs as bracelets, Day breathed new life into the song's angular melody, which wraps itself around a vivid description of "Black bodies swinging/In the southern breeze/Strange fruit hanging/From the poplar trees."

After the song ended, an emotional Day said, "So that was a song that was written over 80 years ago -- and unfortunately, the message in the song is still just as relevant today as it was then."
