"Speaker Gaetz" is something we've heard from various news sites since Rep. Matt Gaetz stood up to Speaker Kevin McCarthy on government funding, but does Gaetz even want the job? He answered Sunday.
Sites like Newsweek and Politico recently referred to "Speaker Gaetz," so it likely didn't surprise the lawmaker when a conservative brought the question to his attention on his social media.
The discussion began when Gaetz quoted an article stating that, in the Gaetz mindset, "the process would be for the government to be funded piece by piece as the House and Senate pass and iron out their differences over 12 individual appropriations bills and President Biden signs them into law.”

"This is the TRUEST line of this otherwise overspun story! You could also describe 'the Gaetz mindset' as 'Regular Order,'" he said Sunday. "It last happened in the 1990’s. We are $33 trillion in debt, facing $2 trillion annual deficits."
A self-described conservative replied:
"Matt - As a true conservative, I can't hear what you're saying for thinking that you are trying to position yourself for the House Speaker's position!" the individual said. "This is not the time nor, the place for this! You are tarnishing your image & damaging the party with your disunity expressions!"
Gaetz issued an uncharacteristically clear reply to that person's comment.
"I can one thousand percent promise you that I have no interest in being Speaker," he said Sunday. "I hope this eases your concern."
