The first woman of color to play a leading role in the Star Wars films has deleted all her posts on Instagram after enduring months of abuse from racist and sexist fans.
NME reported Tuesday that the trolling of Vietnamese-American actress Kelly Marie Tran began in December 2017, shortly after the film came out.
The report noted that a Star Wars-themed wiki page for Rose Tico, Tran's character, was edited to feature racist and sexist language about the actress. An alt-right YouTuber also took aim at the actress' appearance, comparing her unfavorably to another Asian film star.
In "The Last Jedi," Tran played a mechanic that befriended and ended up saving the life of Finn (played by star John Boyega). Despite rave reviews lauding the franchise's increasing diversity, some pro-Trump fans took aim at the film for "promoting feminism," and unsuccessfully tried to game Rotten Tomatoes' rating system to make it appear as if the film was doing worse than it was.
