Starbucks worker insults Latino customer by writing racial slur on his cup

Police were called on a group of black businessmen who didn't order their Starbucks drinks fast enough. Now a Latino customer ordered coffee for "Peter" only to have the name "Beaner" written on his cup.

CBS Los Angeles reported this week that ahead of the nationwide racial bias training, the racial bias facing customers persists.

“He went to Starbucks, and they asked for his name, and his name is ‘Peter,’ and they wrote this ‘beaner,’" friend Miguel Acosta told a local reporter through a translator. “And he’s saying that’s not fair.”

He explained that his friend was extremely saddened by the incident, which took place at the La Cañada Starbucks Wednesday, northeast of Burbank, California.

Customers of the Starbucks location were shocked hearing the news the CBS reporter asked them about.

“I’m shocked,” one woman exclaimed. “I go to that Starbucks almost every day.”

Another man said that he was disappointed in Starbucks.

"I mean, that’s — when you put something in the computer and put a name on something, you’re labeling someone, and I think that’s not right,” he said.

Those at the Starbucks location said that the incident has made them think twice about buying coffee there. Had they known about the incident before their purchase, they told CBS that they might have gone somewhere else for their caffeine kick.

“And I guess it brings back a lot of discrimination. It brings back a lot of old, you know, growth that we should’ve had before,” one customer sitting on the patio explained.

When asked for comment, the store's manager refused to speak and issued a statement from the corporate office instead.

“This is not indicative of the type of experience we want our customers to have when they walk into our stores. We have apologized to the customer directly and are working to make things right,” the statement promised.

The "Beaner" incident came just 24 hours after a black man in Torrance, California was denied access to the bathroom at his Starbucks location. Starbucks said that it intends to close 8,000 locations for a day of mandatory racial bias training for employees.
