Steve Bannon ripped into his former boss, President Donald Trump, on Saturday in an episode of his far-right “War Room” podcast, attacking the president – or at least “the people around” him – over Thursday’s White House dinner with tech CEOs, whom Bannon derided as “demons.”
Trump hosted at the White House a number of high-profile business leaders in the technology sector, among them Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, Apple CEO Tim Cook, and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.
Bannon, who served as Trump’s first White House chief of staff, has frequently criticized Washington’s friendliness with corporations, going so far as to call for increased taxes on wealthier Americans and corporations in what could be considered a rhetorical break from most conservative lawmakers and influencers alike.
And, regarding Trump’s recent dinner with tech CEOs, Bannon said it was a major mistake.
“That was not a good day, Mr. President,” Bannon said. “We're trying to break up Google. We're trying to break up Facebook. We're trying to break up Microsoft, and hell, throw Walmart and all of them in there. The concentration of corporate power with government power is what is destroying this country.”
Bannon also went on to juxtapose the optics of Trump dining with wealthy tech CEOs with the testimony this week of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy before the Senate Finance Committee. Despite facing scrutiny during the hearing from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers alike, Bannon characterized RFK Jr.’s performance as “magnificent,” and compared it unfavorably to Trump’s cozying up to tech CEOs.
“Look at Bobby Kennedy Thursday; a magnificent performance as he stood in the breach and took incoming for three hours and called these folks out,” Bannon said. “And what happened afterwards? The people in the White House around President Trump thought it was a good thing to have 50 demons around the table around President Trump, including Zuckerberg, Bill Gates and Google.”
