'His strategy is make-believe': CNN panel mocks Trump's plan to sell nonexistent border wall to his supporters

A CNN panel on Wednesday mocked President Donald Trump for his frantic insistence that he's already building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, despite the fact that no new wall construction has yet taken place during the first two years of his presidency.

While discussing the president's new rallying cry to "finish" building a border wall that he hasn't even started, New York Times columnist Frank Bruni said the president's plan seems to be creating a false reality for his supporters to believe out of thin air.

"His strategy is make-believe," Bruni said. "A couple of days ago... he stood there on the stage in El Paso and said, 'Crime went way down here after a wall was constructed.' That was not remotely true, and he was told that again and again and he did it anyway."

Bruni then predicted that Trump would start claiming to his supporters that the wall has already been built even though more than a thousand miles along the border would continue to have no barrier.

"And the base is fooled by that?" CNN's Alisyn Camerota asked.

"Well, he's spent four years conditioning his admirers to believe everything he says!" he said. "There's a reason he's been saying 'fake news' for four years, it's for moments like this!"
