Supreme Court puts same-sex marriage on hold in Utah

Same-sex marriages in Utah were halted by the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday.

The nation's highest court granted Utah's request to suspend a judge's ruling that allowed same-sex marriage in the state. Judge Robert J. Shelby had ruled the state's ban on same-sex marriage violated the U.S. Constitution in late December.

The Attorney General of Utah asked the U.S. Supreme Court to stay the ruling last Tuesday.

Same-sex marriage will be on hold in Utah until the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals makes a ruling on the case.

The Supreme Court said the ruling should be stayed "to minimize the enormous disruption to the state and its citizens of potentially having to ‘unwind’ thousands of same-sex marriages."

Nearly one thousand same-sex couples have tied the knot since Shelby's ruling in December.
