Surrogate says Scott Brown supports women: 'A strong man allowed you to blossom'

A surrogate for Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown is telling voters that the Republican lawmaker supports women because he is a "strong man" with a wife and two daughters, who he "allowed" to "blossom."

The Boston Globe on Monday reported that a Friday campaign event at the University of Massachusetts Lowell featured a number of female surrogates, including Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) and former Lowell Mayor Rita Mercier (D).

Mercier "pointed to Brown’s wife and daughters as evidence of his support for women, calling them 'three adorable good woman that are strong and vibrant and independent. You don’t get that way unless you have a strong man that allowed you to blossom.'" according to the Globe.

"Don’t believe the lies," Mercier reportedly said. "Last time I checked, I’m a woman, and I support him."

While Brown has campaigned as moderate, Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren hammered his record on women's health and reproductive rights at a debate earlier this month.

"I have no doubt that Sen. Brown is a good husband and a good father to his daughters," Warren said. "But this is an issue that affects all of our daughters, and our granddaughters. And what matters here is how Sen. Brown votes."

She continued: "[H]e's had exactly one chance to vote for equal pay for equal work, and he voted no. He had exactly one chance to vote for insurance coverage for birth control and other preventive services for women. He voted no. And he had exactly one chance to vote for a pro-choice woman -- from Massachusetts -- to the United States Supreme Court, and he voted no. Those are bad votes for women."

"And I want to be blunt: we should not be fighting about equal pay for equal work and access to birth control in 2012. These issues were resolved years ago -- until the Republicans brought them back."

The most recent Rasmussen poll gave Warren a 2 point edge over the incumbent senator.
