Suspect in custody after fatal shooting and threat of bombing at Las Vegas Starbucks

Las Vegas police have arrested a male suspect in connection with a fatal shooting and hostage standoff involving an explosive device at a Starbucks coffee shop in Las Vegas.

KSNV News said that at around 11:30 a.m. local time, police received a flurry of calls about a situation unfolding at a Starbucks in which one person had been shot and killed and that the gunman was holding hostages inside the restaurant.

Police dispatched a SWAT team to the scene and the suspect was arrested.

Reporters said that a male victim who appeared to have been shot in the chest was taken from the scene and later died at Spring Valley Hospital. No other injuries or fatalities were reported.

Nearby businesses were evacuated when the suspect told police that a backpack in the Starbucks doorway contained explosives.

Homicide detective Lt. Dan McGrath of the Las Vegas Police Department told reporters that the suspect got into a dispute with someone inside the restaurant and shot them. He then went outside the restaurant and returned and blended in with the people who were evacuating the scene.

McGrath said that there was a great deal of confusion at the scene, with no one knowing at first who was involved.

Currently, a bomb squad and federal agents are attempting to ascertain whether the backpack does in fact contain an explosive device.

"That's what's taking a while," McGrath said as helicopters roared overhead.

UPDATE (6:30 p.m. EDT): CBS News said that the backpack does not contain explosives and the area around the scene has been re-opened to traffic.
