Tennessee cop jumps into bed of fleeing pickup truck and shoots unarmed driver dead

A grand jury in Tennessee is considering evidence after a Lenoir City police officer jumped into the back of a fleeing man's pickup truck and shot him to death.

WATE reported that the Officer Tyrel Lorenz was called to Bimbo’s convenience store at around 1 a.m. on Sunday morning where he questioned three people: 30-year-old Joshua Grubb, 40-year-old Toni Ann Sutton and 31-year-old Brandon Lawrence Taylor.

According to District Attorney General Russell Johnson, Lorenz was in the process of handcuffing one of the suspects when Grubb tried to flee and the officer “somehow ended up in the back bed of the pickup truck."

TBI investigators said that Lorenz ordered Grubb, who was suspected of being impaired, to stop more than once before firing his service weapon multiple times at the driver as he accelerated onto Highway 321. Following the shots, the truck swerved into oncoming traffic and came to a stop when it hit a utility pole, according to WBIR.

E.M.S. later pronounced Grubb dead at the scene.

Sutton was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, and Taylor was charged with public intoxication and evading arrest.

The District Attorney's Office is expect to present its findings at a Loudon County grand jury meeting in April.

Lorenz was placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
