Texas cop speaks out for his right to marriage equality: 'Freedom is a big deal'

A police detective in Fort Worth, Texas is speaking out in support of marriage equality days before a federal appeals court rules on the state's ban against same-sex marriages, the Daily Dot reported.

"My partner Justin and I, we live together," Detective Chris Gorrie says in an ad for the Freedom to Marry campaign. "Eventually one day, we'd like to get married just like everybody else."

Gorrie, who joined the department eight years ago, appears in the ad alongside three colleagues expressing their support for him.

"Chris makes a sacrifice everyday along with the rest of us," fellow detective Monica Jackson says.

The Dallas Morning News reported that the commercial has begun airing in Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, and San Antonio.

Earlier this year, the department featured Gorrie in a recruitment video focusing on the LGBT communities.

"Nobody that I know has had an issue with me being gay," he says in the video. "I'm pretty much out at work. I even have a picture of my partner at my desk, and nobody's said anything about it."

The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals is scheduled to hear arguments on Friday regarding the state ban on marriage equality, which was struck down by U.S. District Judge Orlando L. García last February.

Several state bans have been found unconstitutional in the wake of the Supreme Court's ruling striking down the federal Defense of Marriage Act in June 2013.

"Freedom is a big deal," Gorrie says in the ad. "The freedom to marry, the freedom to say what you want to say, and the freedom to do what you want to do."
