Texas man drops dead watching New Year's Eve fireworks, police suspect 'stray bullet' to the head

Police in Houston are investigating how a man who was watching fireworks was fatally shot in the head on New Year's Eve.

According to KTRK, a Hispanic man who was later identified by his family as Javier Rivera was in his driveway watching fireworks on Wednesday night when he dropped dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

Family members told authorities that they had not been firing any weapons.

"They'd come out from their home where they'd had a family gathering to see fireworks that were taking place further south of us here when she reported that her husband just fell to the ground," Houston Police Department spokesperson Ramon Servantes explained. "She goes inside and calls for help and they find him dead here."

Neighbor Gloria Patterson told KTRK that her grandson attempted to perform CPR, but "he never regained any kind of movement or anything."

KTRK's Sharron Melton reported that police suspected that Rivera was hit by a "stray bullet." Investigators were searching for reports of gunfire in the area.
