Texas parents want history book banned over Second Amendment 'militia' definition

Parents in one Texas school district are demanding that one commonly-used history book be banned because they say that the mention of the word "militia" in a sentence about the "Second Amendment" is indoctrinating children to believe they don't have a right to own firearms.

Guyer High School junior Brie Getts told KTVT that she was doing her homework with the book U.S. History: Preparing for Advanced Placement Exams when she noticed something "weird" with the lesson about the Bill of Rights on page 102.

"It says, ‘The people have a right to keep and bear arms in a state militia,'" she explained. “It seems to be worded weird."

Brie brought the 734-page school book to the attention of her father, Sean Getts.

"It’s incorrect because it implies that the Second Amendment is restricted to the state militia," he insisted.

After Sean Getts posted a photo of the paragraph on Facebook, the school began receiving calls from concerned parents.

"I didn’t want to jump to conclusions and say, ‘Oh, they’re trying to indoctrinate our children,’ but kind of the more I thought about it, it needs a lot more scrutiny," he pointed out.

In a statement on Tuesday, a spokesperson for Denton ISD noted that the book in question was a "supplemental instructional aid and not the official textbook for any history classes."

"The teachers and staff are aware of this ‘summary statement’ and are teaching the amendments from the classroom textbook, American Pageant," the statement said. "Please be assured that Denton ISD history teachers are disseminating the correct information on the Second Amendment."

And on Wednesday, authors of the work book told Fox News that the information on the Second Amendment was being revised.

"There was no devious intention in the definition," co-author John J. Newman said.

Sean Getts, however, refused to buy that explanation.

"I don't know if it was intentional or not, but clearly these authors interpreted the amendment in favor of gun control," he told Fox News. "I'm mainly concerned how this ends up in our school system."

The actual text of the Second Amendment reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

In it's 2008 District of Columbia v. Hellerdecision, the Supreme Court clearly ruled for the first time that the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to bear arms. The most recent revision of U.S. History: Preparing for Advanced Placement Exams was updated prior to 2008.
