CNN’s Don Lemon on Wednesday reacted to Doug Jones’ stunning victory in the Alabama Senate race, calling it “a day of reckoning” and a “humiliating defeat for [Roy Moore], the president and the brutal and cynical worldview of Steve Bannon.”
“I said there was going to be a day of reckoning in Alabama, and well, there sure was,” Lemon said during his opening monologue. “This is not the way the president thought this day would go—it was supposed to be a big Republican victory through the Alabama Senate race.”
Instead, Lemon said it was “a humiliating defeat” for the GOP candidate, Donald Trump and his onetime chief strategist.
“This election may have been more about the man than the movement, a movement that may turn out to be not so much grassroots, as astroturf, smoke and mirrors,” Lemon said, referring to the Trump-Bannon populist “playbook” that landed the former reality TV star in the White House. “Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.”
Lemon noted that Trump, who once said he could “stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody” without losing any voters, “can’t stand on the border of Alabama and swing an election.”
“The laws of the political universe still apply,” Lemon said.
