Rachel Maddow began her weekly show by comparing Democrats and Republicans and crushing what she said is an all too frequent narrative that both parties are the same. All politicians are the same.
She began with a story about former President Jimmy Carter trying to cure guinea worm before he died. As of today, the Carter Center says, there are just 6 cases in the world. He also wanted to solve Middle East Peace, but it has proved to be much harder than eradicating a global disease.
She also showed a new commercial Joe Biden's campaign is running that talks about bipartisanship and the days when Republicans and Democrats came together for the betterment of the U.S.
The comparison was to Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who is in trouble with the GOP because he worked with Democrats to try and pass a continuing resolution to keep the government alive.
The conversation evolved into citing a report about the white nationalists communicating with Elon Musk, the owner of the social media site previously known as Twitter. After a nine-month investigation into Musk's text messages revealed in a lawsuit with Twitter, NBC News reporter Ben Collins found that Musk has been following a "plan for Twitter" outlined by a famous white nationalist. It was sent to him via text message.
"The wording of the texts matches the subtitles of the article, 'The Battle of the Century: Here’s What Happens if Elon Musk Buys Twitter,' which had been published three days earlier on the right-wing website revolver.news," the report explained.
"The site is run by the far-right blogger Darren Beattie, a former Trump White House speechwriter who was fired in 2018 for having spoken on a panel alongside white nationalists," it continued. "After the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, Beattie promoted the baseless claim that the FBI had planted agents in the crowd who incited it to storm the building."
Among the strategies outlined in the plan is a war against the Anti-Defamation League, a white nationalist boogyman.
The report explains that the plan outlined on the fringe site is exactly what Musk has followed.
One thing is not like the other, Maddow explained. And both sides aren't the same.
