There's a 'reasonable likelihood' Trump gets indicted after leaving the White House: Preet Bharara

Preet Bharara, the former United States attorney for the Southern District of New York who was fired by President Donald Trump in 2017, says he believes that Trump will likely be indicted after he leaves office -- whether that's 2021 or 2025.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, Bharara said that the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York seems to have the goods on Trump in the form of former "fixer" Michael Cohen's guilty plea that directly implicated the president in committing a felony.

"My former office clearly endorses and believes the fact -- as Michael Cohen admitted in open court -- that he engaged in the conduct he pleaded guilty to at the direction of Individual 1," he said. "Individual 1 is the president. Depending on what the other circumstances are, I believe there’s a reasonable likelihood that they would follow through on that."

Bharara cautioned, however, that Trump may not get convicted even if he's indicted, especially if the case relies on such an unreliable witness as Cohen.

"There’s a difference, though, between accepting a guilty plea from Michael Cohen and going to trial on the strength of that same witness after he’s gone to prison for lying," he said.
