‘They made a mistake’: Liquor board chair slammed with DUI charge after night out at Maryland casino

Prince George's Co. liquor board chairman had such a good time on Thursday night at the new MGM Grand casino opening that he scored a charge of driving under the influence.

Fox5DC reports that Charles Caldwell, III was arrested around 11:40 pm after a crash with two other cars was reported. The officer who responded to the incident smelled alcohol on Caldwell's breath and gave him a field sobriety test. He failed and refused to take a breathalyzer test.

Caldwell told Fox5 that he'd had a cocktail or two over the course of the two hours that he spent at the MGM Grand opening but "this was blown out of proportion."

He also denied that he refused the breathalyzer and that he did take one once he arrived at the police station. “The results were inconclusive," he said.

He also explained that he's almost 73 years old and is sometimes unsteady on his feet and that was why he failed the officer's field sobriety test. “I believe they made a mistake," he said.

The Board of Licenses Commission is made up of five members appointed by Gov. Larry Hogan (R-MD). They enforce alcohol and beverage laws in the state of Maryland and implement local rules and regulations.
