'This just hurts': John Oliver opens with heartrending tribute to Orlando victims

Before sadly inviting viewers to watch "our stupid show," Last Week Tonight host John Oliver began the evening with a cold open to address the tragic shooting in Orlando.

"As I'm sure you know by now, at least 50 people were killed by a gunman at a gay nightclub in what is being described as a terrorist attack," he began. "Look it's still early and details are still emerging and right now -- this just hurts."

"And the worst thing is, this pain is so familiar, in Paris last November. Terrorists seemed to target everything that is wonderful about France. Culture, music, restaurants," he explained. "And, in Orlando, early this morning the gunman attacked a Latin night at a gay club in the theme park capital of the world. And for the record, I will fully embrace a Latin night at a gay club at the theme park capital of the world as a symbol of what is truly wonderful about America."

Referring to shooter Omar Mateen as a "dipshit terrorist who wants us to focus on one man's act of brutality and hatred," Oliver drew attention to video showing lines of people in Orlando standing in the heat to donate blood.

"It kind of reminds you that that terrorist dipshit is vastly outnumbered,"
