Thousands of Irish protestors call for new abortion laws

Thousands in Dublin marched on Nov. 17 to protest the death of a woman refused an abortion in Ireland while she was miscarrying, reported Al Jazeera English.

"Never again!" the protestors chanted while carrying banners bearing the image of Savita Halappanavar, the 31-year-old Indian dentist who died of blood poisoning.

"She was a woman who needed our help, the help of a medical team who understood what the guidelines were, that they could fulfill their Hippocratic oath to do no harm," said one woman at the march.

While abortion is strictly outlawed in Ireland, the country's highest court ruled in 1992 that if the life of the mother is in danger, an abortion is allowed. But there is no law affirming that right, creating a grey area for doctors.

Now abortion rights advocates are putting increasing pressure on the current government to finally pass legislation in order to ensure that what happened to Halappanavar never happens again.
