Toddler bouncing on bed killed by stray bullet just two days after moving in to NJ home

A stray bullet killed a 15-month-old girl over the weekend as she bounced up and down on a bed in a New Jersey home.

In a press conference on Sunday, Essex County Acting Prosecutor Carolyn Murray said that Sania Cunningham's family had just moved in to their Irvington apartment two days before three hooded men walked down the street spraying bullets.

According to WCBS, Cunningham was bouncing on the bed when one of the bullets came through the second floor wall and struck the toddler in the torso just after 4 p.m. on Saturday. Less than an hour later, she was pronounced dead after being taken to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.

Other cars and homes in the neighborhood were also hit by the hail of bullets. It was not immediately clear if the gunmen were shooting at each other or random targets.

Neighbors said that they were shocked that men could walk down the street and shoot up the neighborhood during daylight hours.

“Once you found out, it was like, ‘Wow, that’s real sad,'” said Chris Johnson told WCBS. “And this was in daytime — broad daylight this happened.”

“It’s a shame that, one, for gunshots to keep happening,” Dwayne Harrison pointed out. “Nobody really wants to do anything about where the guns are coming from.”

A $10,000 reward has been offered for information that significantly advances the case. Anyone with information was urged to contact the tip line at 877-847-7432.
