'Trump wants his army back' to 'help him have vengeance': Washington Post's Bob Costa
Appearing on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Monday, Washington Post journalist Robert Costa said that Donald Trump is gathering his allies in Congress around him as he sets his eye on running for president a third time in 2024 and that he will use them to seek revenge for his 2020 loss.
Speaking with co-host Jonathan Lemire, the co-author of "Peril" with Bob Woodward noted Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) warmly embracing Trump at a Des Moines rally over the weekend and pointed out that it was a sign that the former president is tightening his grip on the GOP -- much to the dismay of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
"Donald Trump drew about 20,000 people Saturday night for a rally and Chuck Grassley, a senator, was there and more or less, received endorsement in return," Lemire began. "Your book ends on a note of -- no spoilers -- of warning that Donald Trump is not done with politics. Everything we have seen since then suggests that's the case. What's the latest that you've heard on other Republicans, how they are eyeing the race, where do they feel like Trump might jump in. What is your state of the GOP as we start to think about '24?"
"It's not just Senator Grassley at age 88," Costa replied. "As our book shows, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and so many others trying to rehabilitate president Trump, but president Trump is not changing at all."
"Our book shows at the end that former campaign manager Brad Parscale says Trump wants an army back. That is what he is saying privately," he continued. "If he runs again, he wants his army to help him have vengeance on the entire Democratic system.And he's getting polling saying the Republican Party is more with him than ever. That's the reality here in American politics; Trump is on the march in Iowa and he's not going away."
