Anti-Trump Republicans target Fox News in $50M campaign to swing voters to Biden

A prominent group of Republicans who oppose Donald Trump are on a mission to convince voters who backed the former president in both 2016 and 2020 to switch their support to President Joe Biden in 2024 — and they're spending a lot of money to help in their effort.

Republican Voters Against Trump (RVAT) announced a $50 million multi-platform ad campaign that is designed "both to troll the twice-impeached, four times-indicted ex-president and to genuinely reach out to his most loyal supporters," according to a report from The Independent.

The campaign employs people who they say previously voted for Trump and switch their support to Biden to help convince other Trump supporters to do so. Among voters being targeted are viewers of Fox News.

One ad that ran on the network includes a previous Trump supporter who says, “I will vote Democrat. I can’t believe I’m saying it, but I will. I will vote for Joe Biden."

But according to a former Democratic activist, who asked to remain anonymous when they spoke to The Independent, the notion of the disgruntled Trump supporter who will switch their support to Biden and make a difference in 2024 is wishful thinking for the most part.

"Asked to explain the response, the former Democratic diehard replied that they’d seen all this before: Republicans vowing never to pull a lever for Trump, only to revert to type when in the privacy of the voting booth," The Independent's report stated.

The former activist used the example of poll respondents from 2016 who expressed support for Hillary Clinton only because it was socially acceptable, but nevertheless voted for Trump in the privacy of the voter's booth.

Another person speaking to The Independent, who is close to the Trump campaign, called the RVAT's ad campaign “astroturfed BS from fake Republicans."

RVAT's political director told The Independent that the group is using a similar strategy to the one they employed in the last election, which Biden won.

“What we have found is most persuasive with the center-right voter — who probably has an unfavorable opinion of Donald Trump and Joe Biden — is that hearing from like-minded messengers and seeing them and hearing from them is what gives them the necessary permission structure to say: ‘You know what, I may have voted for McCain and Romney and maybe even Trump in the past, but I can’t get behind this version of Donald Trump,'" Gunner Ramer said.

“It’s this idea … terminating the Constitution, this idea of retribution and revenge that swing voters cannot stand. The people who do our testimonials emphasize that’s the main reason that they can’t support him, even though they previously did,” he added.
