The world appears poised to embrace MAGA ideals — but President Donald Trump is kneecapping that global embrace, a new column opined.
“Today, the global economy is arguably fertile ground for a MAGA. Yet, something is not translating,” according to Eduardo Porter.
The Washington Post columnist and editorial board member believes this lack of translation could be a good thing for those on the left. “There is evidence that Trump is kindling an allergic reaction in other pastures.”
Porter pointed to the recent elections in Canada and Australia, “where Trump’s ascension encouraged voters to drop their support for right-wing Trumpy bedfellows and embrace liberal candidates.”
It is also happening in Denmark, where Social Democrats received a “polling boost after Trump started venting his lust for Greenland.”
Democrats in Norway hope their voters will hold a similar sentiment for their elections in September.
According to Porter, Trump’s presence is “eroding support for the right-wing Progress Party in favor of the incumbent Labor government.”

He does note, “Opposition to Trump is not automatically translating to support for liberalism.” Like in China, where they are seeing an upsurge in nationalism.
Likewise, in Germany, the extreme right “ethno-nationalist Alternative for Germany (AfD)” is gaining popularity. However, voters elevated Friedrich Merz, who is predicted to be a center-right chancellor.
Brittain, too, is seeing a surge on the right. The columnist notes, the “right-wing Reform UK party has also risen in the polls, making strides in local elections.”
Regardless, Porter believes something is “standing in the way of a global Trumpian wave.” He later surmised, “What stands against a worldwide Trumpian pseudo-utopia is Donald Trump: Hostility toward the man is clouding views about his message.”
“This offers a sliver of hope to those of us who still cling to the promise that liberal democracy offers around the world,” he said.
“Trump’s America is unlikely to make many friends because of the man’s penchant for bullying and extorting everyone around him.” Porter believes this attitude, “could hold at bay the emergence of an illiberal, Trump-inflected world order.”
