The Department of Justice may have unintentionally created a weapon that could take down the president, according to an analyst.
In mid-July, the DOJ fired Maurene Comey from her role as a federal prosecutor in the Southern District of New York. Comey is the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, and she was the lead prosecutor on the Jeffrey Epstein case. According to former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner, firing Maurene Comey was a mistake that could come back to haunt President Donald Trump as he tries to distance himself from Epstein.
Kirschner made the comments on progressive YouTuber Brian Tyler Cohen's daily show, "No Lies," on Wednesday.
"Didn't they kind of unleash Maurene Comey to speak freely as long as it's not anything contained in grand jury testimony?" Cohen asked Kirschner.
"They did, and it was not a wise move," Kirschner replied. "The question is: Is Maurene Comey the kind of person who is going to be comfortable stepping into the public light and begin to talk about this?"
Kirschner said federal prosecutors are prohibited by law from talking about grand jury information. That being said, everything she knows that is not included in the grand jury files is fair game, he added.
Trump could also be an animating force in the saga, according to Kirschner.
"We know that Donald Trump will try to retaliate against her," Kirschner said, referring to Comey. "The way he has retaliated against her father by directing that he be criminally investigated when there's no evidence he committed any crimes. So, it's a decision she is going to have to make for herself."
