President Donald Trump's $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal just got riskier, according to one analyst.
Adam Klasfeld, co-founder and editor-in-chief of All Rise News, joined progressive YouTuber Brian Tyler Cohen on a new episode of the "Brian Tyler Cohen" podcast on Tuesday to discuss Trump's lawsuit. Trump initially filed the lawsuit after the Journal published a story about the letter Trump wrote to Jeffrey Epstein for his 50th birthday. Trump claimed at the time that the letter was fake, and that the Journal knowingly published false information to hurt him.
After the Journal and Democrats on the House Oversight Committee published a copy of the letter, including a drawing that Trump said was fake, Klasfeld said Trump's lawyers face new risks in court.
"It's getting more absurd by the minute," Klasfeld said.
Klasfeld argued that Trump has already run into similar trouble. For example, U.S. District Court Judge Donald Middlebrooks ordered Trump attorney Alina Habba and Trump to pay nearly $1 million in 2023 to cover the legal costs associated with a lawsuit filed against Hillary Clinton and dozens of FBI officials.
Middlebrooks also sanctioned Habba in the case. Sanctions can range from paying a monetary fee to losing one's law license.
"One of the most astonishing aspects of this is that the White House is already saying that they're going to continue to pursue the litigation, and they're still claiming that this letter is not genuine," Klasfeld said.
"Maybe this is just bluster from the press secretary, but there are definitely folks wondering in the legal community whether they will be courting sanctions," he added.
